Our History
Our Founder
Cosmos Russell, Owner and Founder of Russell's Funeral Homes was born on September 7, 1929 to Harold and Bridget Russell. He was the third of nine children. He was a very young man when he went to work on the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base. He decided to go into business for himself and opened a taxi company in Stephenville Crossing. It was while he operated his taxi company that he saw a need for an ambulance service and later a funeral home.
In the late 1960's when he opened his second funeral home in Stephenville he continued to operate his taxi and ambulance companies until the late 1980's when he closed his taxi company.
He continued to operate the ambulance service and funeral homes until his passing in 2005 at the age of 76 years.
Our Beginnings
Cosmos Russell, Owner and Founder of Russell's Funeral Homes started in the funeral industry in 1960 with his first funeral home located on Station Road in Stephenville Crossing. He saw a need for a facility who would provide care and comfort to bereaved families in their time of need.
In the early years he provided service to the Stephenville Crossing and surrounding area from a small but functional facility with a prep room, office and a single visitation room. From this small funeral home he provided a caring service to his clientele until 1967-1968 when he opened his second facility in Stephenville from where he was able to expand his service area to the Port au Port Peninsula.
This second facility was larger,it had an office, preparation room, selection room and 2 visitation rooms. In later years he expanded ths facility to include a third visitation room and a chapel. In 1998 a crematorium was put in place at the Stephenville facility and was the first of its kind on the West Coast
Today, a third funeral home exists with a second location in Stephenville to compliment the original location in Stephenville Crossing.
