About Us
The story of this business began 29 years ago, but those involved in it had experience that dated decades before that. Ray Hann and Harry Hiscock joined forces, became partners and decided to open their own store on November 12, 1992.
It started out very small – only about 3,000 square feet, with a staff of four. Marion MacDonald was one of them, and she was a clerk on the team, and Ray’s brother, John, was, and still is, their truck driver. Someone had to safely deliver all the goods to their growing clientele.
Getting to where they were wasn’t always easy, as anyone in business will tell you – especially these days. But they consider these steps to be great memories. Some challenges they faced were the outrageous power bills during the winter, a flood in the storage warehouse they were renting, a fire in the corner of their store caused by a transformer malfunction … so many things that could have made them throw in the towel, but not this group.
Instead, they decided to hang in there. Harry decided to retire in July 2002. Ray became sole owner and then Hometown Furniture made a bold move. They decided to build a new 10,000 square foot beautiful store, and in September 2003, their doors opened to a space that everyone knows so well today. They were better able to showcase their large selection of products. Over the years, and because of their investment and commitment to the western Newfoundland region, Hometown Furniture has seen its customer base grow with their store.
In 2012, they decided to make another big plunge! They joined a buying group and also purchased a 30,000 square foot warehouse. Something they consider to be their best move ever!!
They are so grateful for their dedicated and friendly staff, who gladly greet and serve their loyal customers from the Port au Port Peninsula to Port aux Basques to Rocky Harbour to Deer Lake and all points in between six days a week.
Ray and Marion feel a huge sense of accomplishment when they look around and see what the business has grown into today. It comes with a lot of hard work and long hours, and the root of it all is customer service. They know this is the key to success.
Even during these challenging and unique times, Hometown Furniture continues to be a success, and they have their staff and loyal customers to thank!
